"To exalt oneself is to claim partnership with God" ~ Rumi
Hi All,
Today marks the new moon, symbolic of new beginnings. It is also the Chinese New Year, the year of the water snake. Water is the womb of life and represents gestation. Now is the time to excavate our past, to let go of attachments, anything that hinders our brightest light and like a snake, shed our old skin. Since energy can never be destroyed, only changed or absorbed we can spin our limiting and stagnant patterns into strands of gold, something of value that will help us transition to the next level of our Be-ing.
In Chinese metaphysics the snake is the travelling star and water is the element of transport and communication. Water on top and fire below is the alchemy of sparkling clarity shifting us into a new paradigm of ever awakening consciousness.
In yoga the snake represents kundalini. The coiled snake sits atop our potential until stirred to rise. Kundalini then becomes a guide, a magnetic pull, and a directional force that can chart our course and manifest our heart's desires. This is the ultimate reason to pursue yoga, to heighten our awareness and unite with our true Self to remember that ray that dwells within each one of us, the energy of Love.
On Febrary 14th we celebrate a day devoted to love, St Valentine's Day. One of the main obstacles in opening ourselves to love is our inability to see each other and ourselves as we truly are. Another poignant Rumi verse is “Your task is not to seek for love, but merely to seek and find all the barriers within yourself that you have built against it.” Inflexibility in mind body and heart, the antithesis of yoga drops a veil over our perception and we see separation rather than connection causing grief and anger to arise.
One way to shift this in yoga class is to practice the cobra pose. The curve of the spine in bhujangasana is a stimulus for the movement of prana (life force) in the body, which connects us to our vital essence. The element of fire transforms our limitations into the creative force that awakens desires inspired by our souls.
Join me this Valentine's Day at Spirit of Yoga for a sublime offering as I collaborate with the fabulously talented Monica Page. You will experience the rasa of music and asana as a portal to promote flexibility in body, mind and soul to kindle the fire of courage emanating from our own deep longing to manifest our dreams and desires. Exalt yourself in Partnership with your Self. Come as you are, be your own sweetheart and watch the beauty that is you unfold for YOU are the Love that you seek!
Please take a look at other events being offered this month and in the near future. Ayurveda, the sister science of Yoga and The Art of taking good exquisite care of ourselves is being offered at Urban Yoga Febrary 15-17. Not to be missed, Yoga Rocks the Park has launched its festivities. I am honored to be teaching March 3rd. It is a free day due to the generosity of Green Living Magazine.
