The month of May is named for the Earth Goddess Maia. May 1, Beltane, the Celtic festival of sacred fire signifies the opening of light and life. As I’m writing this I’m in Dallas, Texas assisting Rod Stryker in one of his Pure Yoga Master Trainings. In exploring the Surya Gayatri today, we contemplated the creation of Earth. As an explosion of the sun, the molten core of our planet still contains some of that essence. Imagine life without light or heat. Light and fire are sacred within themselves. They are the essence of life, and prana, the vibrant force that sustains life is a link to this source. Surya Gayatri is an ode to this. It is a mantra to guide us, to awaken us to the potential of radiant light that is the essence of all life.
Ideally through the practice of yoga our awareness is expanding. We show up, we start where we are, become more aware, make progress and take a step in our evolution. The more aware we become the more choices we have. The promise of the Gayatri is that as we become more aware of this luminosity, this source light within us, we will be guided to make the right choices at the right time. In other words, as the clouds of maya, (illusion) are lifted, clarity and light remain.
The Gayatri Mantra:
Om bhur bhuvah svaha
tat savitur varenyam,
bhargo devasya dhi mahi,
dhiyo yo nah prachodayat.
Love and Light,
Mary
