You were made for this

You Were Made for This ~

“Ours is not the task of fixing the entire world all at once, but of stretching out to mend the part of the world that is within our reach. Any small, calm thing that one soul can do to help another soul, to assist some portion of this poor suffering world, will help immensely. It is not given to us to know which acts or by whom, will cause the critical mass to tip toward an enduring good. What is needed for dramatic change is an accumulation of acts, adding, adding to, adding more,
continuing. We know that it does not take everyone on Earth to bring justice and peace, but only a small, determined group who will not give up during the first, second, or hundredth gale.
One of the most calming and powerful actions you can do to intervene in a stormy world is to stand up and show your soul. Soul on deck shines like gold in dark times. The light of the soul throws sparks, can send up flares, builds signal fires, causes proper matters to catch fire. To display the lantern of soul in shadowy times like these -- to be fierce and to show mercy toward others; both are acts of immense bravery and greatest necessity. Struggling souls catch light from other souls who are fully lit and willing to show it. If you would help to calm the tumult, this is one of the strongest things you can do.
There will always be times when you feel discouraged. I too have felt despair many times in my life, but I do not keep a chair for it. I will not entertain it. It is not allowed to eat from my plate.
In that spirit, I hope you will write this on your wall: When a great ship is in
harbor and moored, it is safe, there can be no doubt. But that is not what great ships are built for.”
~ Clarissa Pinkola Estes

Dear Soul Family and Friends,

I begin with the above message dated Jan. 28, 2008 from Clarissa Pinkola Estes that continues to be timely as I endeavor to find my voice and transform my anger into a catalyst for change. I’ve been having real live conversations with friends and family about All events since November. I’m sometimes vocal on social media and sometimes not. I’m weary of the so-called “spiritual community” pointing fingers and blaming and shaming others for not speaking out as well as being hurtful when they do but it’s not up to their ideals. This reflection of unrest is everywhere. No community is immune. We have to strengthen the immune system of our culture, nurture self-care, take time away from technology and have real meaningful and challenging conversations with one another. Create a shift in perception by truly listening with your whole body; opening to another’s experience. When we see through this lens of respectful curiosity we can see beyond differences and note our shared humanity and widen the sphere of inclusivity. Author Laura Ingalls Wilder said, “persons appear to us according to the light we throw upon them from our own minds.”

I wish I could teach/share the message of the Surya Gayatri with the entire world. Ha! In writing this I just had a flashback to 1970 something when I was a young teen and Sister Marita took me to an Up with People Concert in Madison, WI. where I first heard “I’d like to teach the world to Sing” (In perfect harmony).

Lyrics
I'd like to build the world a home
And furnish it with love
Grow apple trees and honey bees
And snow white turtle doves
I'd like to teach the world to sing
In perfect harmony
I'd like to hold it in my arms
And keep it company
I'd like to see the world for once
All standing hand in hand

And hear them echo through the hills
For peace throughout the land
(That's the song I hear)
I'd like to teach the world to sing
In perfect harmony
I'd like to teach the world to sing
In perfect harmony
I'd like to build the world a home
And furnish it with love

Grow apple trees and honey bees
And snow white turtle doves
I'd like to teach the world to sing
In perfect harmony
I'd like to hold it in my arms
And keep it company
I'd like to see the world for once
All standing hand in hand
And hear them echo through the hills
For peace throughout the land

(That's the song I hear)
I'd like to teach the world to sing
In perfect harmony
I'd like to teach the world to sing
In perfect harmony
I'd like to teach the world to sing
In perfect harmony, that's the song I hear
Songwriters: William M Backer / Roger F. Cook / Roquel Davis / Roger Greenaway

I digress, yet it seems to fit in with the theme. Today, I am inspired by one of the oldest Vedic Hymns, the Gayatri Mantra, the power of Intelligence, the Divine Mother who protects her children. It is a petition for inner clarity and intuitive awareness. It doesn’t matter what your religion, your color or your ethnicity is. It is a gift to all humanity. It is said that this sacred prayer spirals through the entire universe from the heart of the chanter, appealing for peace and divine wisdom for all. There are many translations and the one that I engage with is… May there be peace. May there be peace in the triple worlds; on earth, in heaven and beyond. May I remember that eternal, luminous light that dwells within my own heart. May my mind, my intellect be inspired by her brilliance and take the right action at the right time. This is the promise of the great Gayatri when meditated upon with devotion and reverence for one’s own well-being.

We are in the process of darkness being revealed. I read a quote recently that “things are not getting worse. They are getting uncovered. We must hold each other tight and continue to pull back the veil.” We are in a state of hyper awareness. Problems escalate when we rush to action. There is a missing link and that is acceptance. Now don’t get me wrong… I’m not saying we have to like it. I certainly do not. Yet, when we pause, take a breath, digest, chew on our own shadow, we enter the realm of acceptance. Then we can ask ourselves…This being true… what is the most loving kind thing I can do for myself in this moment? We can then take the right action at the right time and stand up for truth with dignity and high regard for ourselves and others.

I will be spending time today during the solar eclipse in meditation on the Gayatri as well as my own Guru Mantra and of course the Mantra of the breath, “so ham”. Mantra means to protect the mind, that which has the power to direct the mind. When we are emboldened with power from the Infinite, we have the ability to affect change which brings me back to the beginning of my offering. Since its not feasible to teach the entire world the Gayatri, what I can do is to maintain my own practice and mend the undigested wounds of my shadow so that I may remember the unchanging luminous spirit that resides within; to rise up fierce, show my soul and share my spark in acts small and grand.

Clarissa says that calming the tumult is one of the strongest things we can do.This is my currency; to be a value creating human through the offerings of Yoga in its full spectrum.

And on that note, I’d like to conclude by bringing your attention to a few International and distinct offerings I am so proud and pleased to share with you for our greater benefit. By growing our capacity to hold light through ritual, practice and sacred self-care we can send up flares and display the lantern of soul in these shadowy times. My hope is that our collective efforts turn the tide toward a more enduring landscape of transparency and love where we remember that at our core we are more alike than not and revel in our rich and diverse soulful Being.  It’s going to take time and…we were born for times like these.

Lead with Love,
Mary

"Stay ahead of the game of seeking. We cannot serve others if we do not fill our own 'seeking cup' on a daily basis. We can’t. The line is too thin. The ice is too thin. If even a little bit of time goes by, and we ignore it...we fall through the ice.
Personal practice. Personal practice. Personal practice.
A yogi who does not do sadhana (practice) is an actor; a parrot...a bird who’s memorized some words. Your well that you draw on has to be filled...and not personal practice to the point of only giving you just enough to get by...that’s not filling your cup. It’s not about maintenance. It’s about fulfilling your seeking. That should be your primary focus." ~ Yogarupa Rod Stryker

Hi All,
I hope your Thanksgiving was wonderful in all ways. I taught my annual Yoga class and prior to teaching I pulled a card from My Empowered Life deck which became the theme for practice. The question was . "Who is the most powerful person you know? What similar qualities do you share with them?  " Yikes!!! I wanted to put in back in the deck and pick a different one. It's easy to see greatness in others and more challenging to see it in ourselves. But truth be told you wouldn't be able to recognize it in others unless you possess it yourself. Marianne Williamson says it's not our darkness we are most afraid of ~ It's our light. Dare to be bright and you will change the world.
I hope your holidays and holy days are peaceful and filled with JOY. Here are my end of the year and into the New Year Offerings. If you are in the greater Phoenix area I hope to see you for some of them and to all my friends around the world, please know that my life is richer for our meeting and I carry you in my heart.
Love to One and All.

“It is the time to invite fire into our lives fire to burn away all that we have outgrown and all that no longer serves us; fire that makes the wild things grow in us, for which our inner selves have longed..."
~ Cait Johnson and Maura D. Shaw from Celebrating the Great Mother"
Picture
Hi Everyone,

On Sunday we celebrated summer solstice, the longest day and shortest night. At a mystical level it is to celebrate light ~ the power of light over darkness ~ to celebrate life itself ~ life at its fullest. This is really our only obligation ~ to bring the best brightest version of ourself to the forefront of life. In the Rig Veda, one of the oldest known yoga treatises the first verse is Om Agni Mide, "I meditate on the fire that brings me to the front of existence."

Our star, the sun, is a ball of fire in the sky. It supplies energy for life on earth.  It is essential to our existence and like the sun we possess the power to nurture and sustain. To nurture by inviting fire into our lives, to burn away our habits and patterns that no longer serve us and to sustain that which ignites passion to fulfill our desires to propel us into the lap of dharma. Each one of us has a dharma code, a unique purpose to fulfill in this world, a spiritual blueprint that is a guiding force for that which we have longed. When you align with Nature and play that unique note in the symphony of creation you become a beacon of light and a force unto yourself. This is what the world thirsts for ~ more people living on purpose. This is the energy of the solstice ~ to burst full force into being. When we remember our light, the deep root of our being, we remember our connection to one another and that we belong to each other.

Please join me this Sunday, June 28, for a Global Event to support our brothers and sisters in Nepal, as they still need our offerings to rebuild communities and relieve the massive burden created by the earthquake in April. Please look to mywebsite for details. And while there check out my Retreats page. I’m super excited to announce that I will be presenting at The Geneva Yoga and Music Festival in Geneva, Switzerland, in September followed by a Retreat in Ibiza, Spain. The Roar of Joy~ Come for one, stay for both.

Check out my new schedule at Moksha Yoga Phoenix. I am here most of the summer and I would love to see you!

May we stay cool in our head, burn bright in our heart, and blossom in the gold of summertime. Be humble for you are made of earth; be noble for you are made of stars.

Seeds grow in the dark — so do we
Let’s stop making such a virtue out of the light
Let’s turn toward what’s in the shadows
Let’s breathe it in, breathe it here
Meeting it face to face
Until we realize
That what we are seeing
Is none other than us
In endarkened disguise

Seeds grow in the dark — so do we
Let’s not be blinded by light
Let’s unwrap the night
Building a faith too deep to be spoken
A recognition too central to be broken
Until even the darkest of days
Lights our way     ~ Robert Masters

Hello Friends,

Last week ushered in a host of auspicious Nature. The Vernal Equinox coincided with a new moon and a solar eclipse. It’s been a time of letting go of old stories, ancient patterns, and habits that keep us stagnant and feeling small. As we dissolve these illusions and heal ourselves we also heal three generations back and pay it forward.

I was recently back east at the Himalayan Institute and was fortunate enough to have a private session with the wise and wonderful Shari Friedrichsen. Check her out online herehttps://yogainternational.com/profile/45 She said to me “You can teach yoga as long as you like but your real life work is to heal yourself, your wounds.” We all have them right?

I love to bask in the Light, especially this time of year when the valley is dripping in tendrils of gold pouring forth from the laden branches of the Palo Verde and the heavenly scent of orange blossoms fill the air. Yet… seeds grow in the dark, where after a period of maturation and ripening dazzle us with their spectacular display of the creative force.

There is a period of hibernation, hermitage if you will. I had the proverbial rug pulled out from underneath me just before the holidays and naturally and humanly went into a bit of a panic. Friends and family either vacillated telling me, “it’s all good” and or leading me toward action. Instinctively, I knew I needed to do things differently if I wanted a different outcome. So, I drew away from the noise and chaos and decided to take No action. I chose to sit with what is, to sit in acceptance, to rest, restore, nourish, create space and actively wait to envision what new wanted to come forward.  It is and still is a process. I leaned into my practices of softening attention, pausing into everyday sacred moments and communing with nature, whether it be an exquisite sunset hike; an external reminder of the glory of God or sitting in stillness; a portal to the Divine within.

Lo and behold, slumbering passion, dormant creativity came into play. Yoga would call this Lila, the divine play of Life. Out of the dreaming watery Pisces comes the inner fire of Aries, bringing with it a new awakening. It’s time to recommit, evolve and take a stance of power. Not a patriarchal power that comes from expectations and the demands of the outer world but a power anchored in the feminine; one that grows in valiant fearlessness and self illuming light each time we recognize and honor her wisdom.

Power is in being brave enough to enter into the dark with interest and curiosity to meet ourselves with tenderness and compassion and to listen… really listen for as long as it takes, and only then emerge to follow the boldness, to align with and trust the wisdom of dharma to support us and light the way.

One of the ways to align with dharma is to listen to that soft voice that whispers to you everyday. It’s your inner GPS, a navigational tool that grows in power as you build the muscle of believing yourself and daring to follow the impulse that leads you home to what you knew all along. First we have to still the mind through yogic practice, breathing techniques and meditation so that we can recognize that which is not so mysterious after all!

If you want to learn more about Creating a Life of Purpose and Passion, Thriving in all areas and Manifesting your Desires, come to San Francisco with me at the end of May where I will be assisting my Teacher Yogarupa Rod Stryker with The Four Desires Workshop. http://www.parayoga.com/events/2015/226

Prior to that, my boldness is leading me in collaboration with Gather Yoga to Italy, Switzerland and France from April 1-27, for another golden opportunity to connect with brilliant yogi’s and yogini’s across the Pond.  I find it interesting to note that as I am writing this I recall that when I am feeling less than and small, the world seems looming and large and when I relax into my true nature I remember that within me there is a light that lights the whole world, and then synchronicity appears everywhere in the connectedness of All that Is. This is true for each of us. And here is Lila at play again. We forget for the sheer delight of remembering again. There is treasure in the dark as we mine for our own gold and fill our wounds with it. This is how we become more Beauty-Full. Go gently into the darkened night for that is where you will land among the stars and take your rightful place among them.

May this week’s lunar eclipse, followed by the full moon on the eve before Easter enhance your burgeoning, blooming Spring Spirit. Joy to You as you rise up into your ever-evolving powerful Being.

Only love,

Mary

p.s. Stay tuned for other exciting news upon my return. Rumor has it there’s a new studio opening and I will be joining their team of teachers. Follow me on Facebook and Instagram for the most current information.

  • milk of choice
  • 3 pitted dates
  • a pinch of saffron
  • optional: turmeric and ginger (fresh and/or ground): I use these as an added immune boost if feeling a cold coming on
  • handful of nuts (I use either cashews or peeled almonds)
  • 10-20 black peppercorns
  • heaping spoon of ghee (organic butter, or even coco oil could be used here)
  • cardamon
  • cinnamon
Bring to a boil: milk, dates, saffron, a bit of ground pepper and optional turmeric and ginger (if you use cow milk you need to boil 3 times for better digestion)

In a blender, add your nuts, pepper, ghee/butter, and spices together with the warmed milk mixture and blend until the pepper is fine (otherwise it sinks to the bottom for a spicy last sip!)

ENJOY!
